Thankfully, the marketplace is responding with trading and rebalancing solutions available from several technology vendors. The custodians’ best chance to compete with these vendors is to buy them (note the purchase of iRebal by TDAmeritrade last year).
Here are my keys to supporting efficient trading: *Access to near real-time account balances across a client household, grouped according to investment strategy *Defined target models assigned to each account strategy group *Trade proposal and approval engine *Straight Through Processing of trades (electronic trade file uploaded to custodian platform) *Automated trade reconciliation of submitted trade data to trade confirmation data with exception flagging
Heaven forbid if advisers continue to use custodians and trust companies that perform trading through faxed forms. It’s no longer the 1990s.
